100% Renewable Electricity Commitment by 2030
The University of Melbourne has publicly committed to achieve zero net emissions from electricity by 2021. They also have a plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Greenpeace Australia Pacific is seeking clarification about whether the 2021 net zero commitment will be delivered with 100% renewable electricity.
Power Purchase Agreement
Melbourne University has signed two large scale PPAs. One was via the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project, led by the City of Melbourne for the Crowlands wind farm currently in operation. The other was with a Telstra-led consortium for the Murra Warra wind farm which was operational in early 2020. The combined commitment approximates the university’s current total electricity demand across all campuses.
On-site Solar
Melbourne University has installed 21 solar installations totalling around 7,000 panels across its campuses. These installations are generating enough energy to power roughly 900 homes.

University of Melbourne ranked #117 on the list of the largest electricity users in Australia in 2018-19.
